Starbucks

If you have been apart of the creative studio at Starbucks HQ, then you have worn a million different hats. You are a designer, you are an illustrator, a typographer, a brainstormer and a what-ifer. You create for paper goods, you design for online experiences. You concept a year in advance for holiday cups, you are asked to design something for the Unicorn Frappuccino in just a few days. You jump on planes to go to press checks in the Midwest, you go to month-long photoshoots for drink and food shots that make people’s mouth water.

You work with witty writers, cool-headed producers and print production experts that have been in this gig before you ever had your first sip of a Pumpkin Spice Latte. You present ideas to your teammates, to managers, to directors, to VPs… you might even find yourself in an impromptu presentation with Howard S. himself. I did all this.

US/Canada Seasonal Promos

I was part of the small but mighty team of talented folks tasked to create seasonal promotions for over 8,000 company-operated and 6,250 licensed stores. And that was just for the US. From flashy flagship stores to airport terminal grab and go’s, I helped concept and create anything and everything from holiday cups to menu boards. It wasn’t all about the holidays or other seasonal collateral. I designed the Draft logo, made Spotify cards for Starbucks playlists and made assets for the Unicorn Frappuccino. I worked on stuff that never saw the light of day, I participated on projects that millions of people have seen.

Starbucks LBS Posters

When you weren’t working on seasonal promotions, you might be lucky enough to get the chance to showcase your individual talents in the giant universe that Starbucks spans. Working in the highly collaborative creative studio was amazing, but it was rare to have a chance to design something that no one else touched. I had a opportunity to design a trio of posters for the Little Big Show. LBS is an annual concert series put on by Starbucks that was created to benefit Seattle’s city's arts programs. Each poster is meant to show a spirit of helpfulness and charity.

Other Fun Things

Getting to design a gift card at Starbucks was a dream for anyone in the creative studio. I had the chance to make a few. I made a holiday card featuring a fleeting fox in a snowy forest and also a digital Valentine’s WeChat card. I also sketched out tons of other ideas for different cards. Some were made, some were not, but it was all so very fun.
